Blagoevgrad is situated in the south-west part of Bulgaria. The town with population over 80 000 habitants is the biggest town of Pirin Macedonia. It is placed near Greece and Macedonia and there is an easy access to the capital city - Sofia, which is situated 100 km away in north-west direction. The railway, that connects Central Europe with Greece, and the international road E79 are near Blagoevgrad.

Blagoevgrad has a great cultural and historical inheritance. Ceramic fragments - the first evidence of human activity, are dated from the 10th century BC. The region of Blagoevgrad is full of nature gifts. This includes soft Mediterranean climate, lots of mineral springs, wanton mountain forests and two famous rivers.

Blagoevgrad is situated in the pedestal of the south-west slopes of Rila Mountain, on the both sides of the river Bistritza - left affluent of the river Struma, above the remains of the ancient roman village Skaptopara. This characteric makes Blagoevgrad an important cultural, administrative and industrial center of the south-west region.

In Blagoevgrad there are two universities: South-West University "Neofit Rilski" and the first American university in Eastern Europe. The fame of the city and of Bulgaria is being spread by the ensemble for folk songs and dances "Pirin", which is e winner of many national and international prizes. The quarter "Varosha" is of special interest for the visitors because of its unique architecture.
